“The Savoy,” the very name carries a legacy of gracious luxury, recalling legendary figures such as Ceasar Ritz, Auguste Escoffier, and Winston Churchill – who are tied by history and lore to the landmark hotel located in the West End theatre district in London. Musings by the ImagineNaples waterfront team: Perhaps in tribute to the hometown of its namesake, the grounds of the Savoy contain quite an interesting conversation piece – a “red telephone box,” identical to the charming red icons found throughout London and the rest of the United Kingdom. This public telephone kiosk is located near the pool at Savoy. The “telephone box”  appears to be a “K6" model – first introduced in 1935 to commemorate the silver jubilee of King George V. This homage to the home country of the “original” Savoy is very ironic – as the original red boxes were designed to protect the public from the notoriously damp British climate, and the kiosk at the Savoy in Naples is surrounded by swaying palms and everlasting sunshine most of the year.
You don’t need to exhaust “six degrees of separation” to link the history of the Savoy hotel in London to present day Naples, Florida. After opening in 1889, the Savoy in London eventually recruited César Ritz from Paris to be its manager. In a coup, Ritz brought maître chef Auguste Escoffier with him to the Savoy. Ritz was known as “king of hoteliers, and hotelier to kings,” and Escoffier is widely hailed as the father of modern French cooking, and a pioneer in professional kitchen organization. ( Kaiser Wilhelm II once exclaimed to Escoffier: “I am the Emperor  of Germany, but you are the emperor of chefs”). Later, the Hotel Ritz was opened in Paris, and the Carlton in London. Years later, the names were bought and franchised in the United States, with the first Ritz Carlton in America debuting in Boston.
Naples today is known as a place where gourmands, “foodies,” and connoisseurs of fine cuisine congregate. It is part of the fabric of the lifestyle.
